DESIGN FOR DIGNITY
Worldwide 2.5 billion of people still lack access to adequate sanitation.
The consequences are inhumane conditions, health problems and high mortality rates, especially among children.Environment contamination and leads to the spreading of disease and unsafe food supplies.Especially in emergencies, conventional toilets fail and rapid deployable sanitation solutions are needed.
MoSan is an innovative and aspirational alternative to common sanitation practices. All elements are designed by participatory methods in partnership with users and stakeholders. The toilet and the sanitation system can be locally adapted to people’s needs and the infrastructure.
MoSan started in 2011 in Bangladesh when the industrial designer Mona Mijthab worked with GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH) in Dhaka and Mymensingh. Research projects at Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal in Germany and Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) in Switzerland followed. Collaboration with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) supported the technological development. Intensive pilot activities of MoSan products have been conducted in cooperation with Oxfam, Sanivation and WSUP in Kenya.
The MoSan developemt is made possible through the kind support of: GIZ, IDIN, USAID, Creative Hub, Climate-KIC and is part of the CEWAS program. The project received the Bestform Award 2013, and the Hans-Sauer Social Design Award 2015.
MoSan offers a user-friendly urine diverting dry-toilet (UDDT) for private in-home use. The light-weight toilet is prefabricated, optimized for stacking, shipping and transport. With its elegant design the toilet becomes a status symbol, thereby raising awareness and demand for hygienic sanitation.
Feces and urine are separated into removable containers, which allow easy and convenient collection and transport in areas with poor infrastructure. The separation simplifies the handling (reduction of treatable waste by 90%) and enables excreta recycling. All components are durable and long-lasting. Cleaning and handling is convenient and different colors and designs are available.
The sanitation service includes training for users, health promotion, collection of excreta and maintenance. The service is market-based and offers job opportunities for the local community. There is a variety of treatment and reuse opportunities including: composting, anaerobic digestion, or the production of fuel-briquettes. Depending on local demand, infrastructure, and know-how the service can be adapted. We offer to design the service using design thinking and participatory methods.
